Clancy: Clear Crime? Or Is It?
The Lindsay Clancy murder trial, the legal battle lines are clearly drawn. Prosecutors say Clancy intentionally killed her children, while the defense argues she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
The facts are devastating: she admits to killing her three children, and her subsequent suicide attempt left her permanently paralyzed.
This leaves the public and the jury with agonizing questions. What would cause a mother to jump after such horrific acts? What does that final, desperate leap say about her state of mind? Was it the final act of a complete psychiatric break, or was it a sudden realization of guilt?
This is where Bempathy®—banter + empathy with a win/win mindset—matters. It asks us to step back and see the entire picture: the facts of the murders, the lost lives of the children, a mother who attempted suicide, and a father and extended family living with unimaginable grief.
This case forces us to look directly at the intersection of severe mental illness and criminal justice. Where do you draw the line between a medical emergency and criminal accountability—and what does that say about the kind of society we want to be?
Let’s work together and use Bempathy® (Banter + Empathy with a win/win mindset). Without chit-chat the world will continue to divide. Bempathy® is more than just a combination of banter and empathy. It is “The Voice of Reason” in a society that needs a voice of reason. Bempathize®.
Bempathy® Tip: Situations are rarely “black or white.” To get the full picture, look for the third side of the coin.
The next time you find yourself in a “situation,” try the Bempathy Triangle: step back — emotionally, physically, or both — so you can see the bigger picture instead of reacting from the moment you’re in.
